Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by the mother, her grandmother, as well as her godparents. Her father was absent from her family. As a child, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford started to become fascinated by acting at the age of teenager, and she joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After just a week she decided it wasn't the right fit for her. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was able to secure the position on her 4th application. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler, a regular character in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993 but at the time, she had already made her television debut in the 1991 season in the show Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". Tate was seen in television shows like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning in the Nineties. Also, she was a regular performer at the theater, ultimately joining the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up comedy, which she began adding to her repertoire in the year 1996, was soon gaining her admiration.
